Info on the Morrigan
She is the goddess of
Battle, Queen of the Witches, and Goddess of Magic. She is the triple goddess known
as the Morrigan, whose name means 'great queen.' Sometimes she is portrayed as
three crones, other times as the more traditional triple goddess: one virgin,
one mother, and one crone. The three goddesses of the Morrigan are Badb (crone),
Macha (mother), and Nemain (virgin)." It should be mentioned, however, that the
goddesses who make up the triple aspect are debated. Some sources say that the
Morrigan is erroneously linked to Macha (with the name of the Morrigan as "Morrigna",
and her triple aspects as "Badb Catha, Nemhain, and Morrighan).
The three
aspects of the Morrigan function as deities encompassing the complete cycle of
Celtic life. The Morrigan are the rulers of war and bringers of death, but they are
also the keepers of the soul until it can be reborn, taking the soul full cycle and
back again. Badb is the crone aspect who is said in some myths to preside over the
cauldron of regeneration in the Otherworld, which makes clear the rebirthing aspect
of the death-dealing Morrigan.
