Purpose of Casting a Circle

A circle has many purposes, but they can be broken into two main categories: 1) to create sacred space, and 2) as an energy barrier.

As "sacred space," the circle sets our mind for "special work." It defines the area where we can cast off our mundane selves and free our spiritual selves. When we enter a circle, our minds accept that we are working in an area that is a "world outside the world." Similiar to the concept of a church, it is an area where we feel we can communicate more clearly and easily with deity. In both cases (a circle and a church), one can speak with deity without being within them, but our minds are more accepting of the communication when we are within one of these sacred spaces.

As an energy barrier, the circle holds and concentrates energy until it is ready to be released rather than allowing it to disperse prematurely. It also acts as a protective barrier, preventing negative energy from entering and doing harm or diluting the energy raised during circle. This is also a "mental" aid, as knowing one is within the protective barrier of the circle allows you to concentrate more on your activities within the circle (rather than being distracted by worrying about negative energies).

So the circle serves both as sacred space and energy barrier. It sets our mind for "special work" and protects us from negative energies, and concentrates energies raised within.
